The 8th (?) birthday celebration together with Kaiyang and gasp … milkshakes and cakes have given way to pizza and beer.
In truth I had been feeling an evasive sense of dread whenever someone asked about my birthday plans – precisely because I had none. And while I love an elaborate day of celebrations as much as any other girl, I didn’t feel like doing anything this year. Or rather, I didn’t want to do anything I didn’t really want to do, one area which I definitely need more practice in.
And so I’ve come to realise that not doing anything for a birthday in no way makes the day any less special. Because special is when I receive a video montage of our time together, sent all the way from Hong Kong. Special is when friends take the time to call or text me happy birthday, and when I spend it with the bestest friend of all. And special is simply savouring the moment and feeling thankful for all the amazing things that have happened so far.
For me this year, doing nothing is the special-iest thing of all.
